Press release on the ban of house auctions and government’s stance

December 4, 2013

While the lift of the first and main house of the family auctions ban is a time bomb at the foundations of the Greek society, the government is still unconvincingly pretending that it negotiates on the issue. On the contrary, the government should have made clear that such a prospect is out of discussion.

The parliament cannot let the citizens, especially the financially weakest among them, unprotected and exposed to loan sharks and international funds that are profiteering and investing in the destruction to the point of taking away the people’s houses.

Confronted with this alarming prospect, SYRIZA has submitted an amendment, as a minimum measure of protection. SYRIZA is proposing the extension of the suspension period for auctions and the ban of direct or indirect transfer of mortgages and personal loans.

Enough is enough. The government and the MPs are accountable and need to give an answer. Either they will vote in favor of SYRIZA’s amendment or they will allow the speculators to take the people’s houses and to profiteer against the people.
