SYRIZA's press office release on Syria’s chemical weapons arsenal destruction in the Mediterranean waters, south of Crete

February 10, 2014

Lack of information and transparency are marking until now all the moves on the issue of the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons.

The only solid fact is the North European and Balkan countries’ denial to host in their soil the dilution of the weapons with the process of hydrolysis. To be noted, this chemical weaponry was produced and sold to Syria from industries located in North Europe.

The decision by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for destructing the weapons on a special vessel in international waters in the area south of Crete raises many questions and generates concerns about the process.

Has it been inquired whether there will be any environmental consequences in the area as a result of this certain procedure? The Mediterranean is an enclosed sea and therefore even the slightest error could generate a terrible impact.

Furthermore, is it ensured that no chemical waste will be disposed at the sea?

The ministry of Foreign Affairs has so far tried to conceal the issue, only referring to the U.N.’s briefing in a meeting with several NGOs.  The briefing is officially refuted by WWF, a fact that adds to the people’s fear that there are neither guarantees provided nor a concrete control over that dangerous procedure.
