Today’s crucial presidential elections in the USA concern primarily the American people, but affect us all.
The political message of these elections -on racist violence, the public healthcare system, taxation of the rich, gender rights, the rule of law and climate change- will be heard around the world.
The message, which is of direct interest to us, will also be about US foreign policy. The question today is who will work most effectively for peace and stability, particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.
SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance has consistently supported the left-wing forces of the Democratic Party and the struggles they have carried out, for decades now, together with the US’s multifaceted social movements. We believe that a victory for Joe Biden, the Democratic Party’s candidate, will constitute a significant, positive development for the strengthening of these struggles, within limits that we are clearly aware of.
Irrespective, however, of the election results, the dynamic social movements that have been gaining strength in the USA and have also influenced the Democratic Party, have major struggles ahead of them in opposing social and economic inequality and defending social justice.
