Dimitris Tzanakopoulos was born in 1982 in Athens.
He is a lawyer, a graduate of the Law Faculty of the University of Athens, and he holds a master`s degree in Philosophy of Law from the same faculty.
He was Secretary of the Youth of SYNASPISMOS from 2005 to 2010. In 2010-2012 he studied towards a PhD at the Faculty of Law of Birkbeck, University of London, while in the academic year 2011-2012 he worked as an adjunct lecturer at the same University. In 2012 he interrupted his doctoral studies and returned to Greece in order to take up the position of legal advisor for the Leader of the Opposition, Alexis Tsipras. From January 2015 until November 2016 he was Secretary-General to the Prime Minister of Greece.
In November 2016, he was sworn in as Minister of State and was appointed Government Spokesperson. He remained in this position until June 2019, when he was replaced in order to participate in the national elections. He was elected MP of SYRIZA-PROGRESSIVE ALLIANCE in Athens.
After the elections of July 7, 2019, he served as parliamentary spokesperson of SYRIZA, a position he held until September 6, 2020, when he was elected Secretary of the Central Committee of SYRIZA - Progressive Alliance.
He has published academic papers and articles in ‘Law and Critique’; edited volumes of the ‘Nicos Poulantzas Institute’; and various other journals and newspapers.
